The instructor will demonstrate and provide hands-on instruction in using a browser to navigate the Internet and for finding materials in the Library’s catalog. (Occasionally this class is offered in Chinese.)

Public Computer Training: Google Search Class
. Friday, 9:30—11:30 a.m. Central Park Library Technology Training Center.
Learn how to use internet search and internet resources for schoolwork and home use. The class is friendly and paced to your speed. Demonstrations and practice sessions develop techniques for effective search query formation and evaluating the trustworthiness of web information. Sharpen your web searching skills by learning from expert from Google.

Daniel M Russell is a research scientist at Google where he works in the area of search quality, with a focus on understanding what makes Google users happy in their use of web search.
This class is for beginning and intermediate level web searchers. Come and bring your Internet search questions. It will be a fun 2 hour class!

Parenting workshop (adults only) Monday, 7:00 p.m., August 11, Central Park Library Redwood Room. Shanna Brown, Santa Clara Unified School District kindergarten teacher, will facilitate the 4th annual "Kindergarten Kickoff" for parents of children who will be attending kindergarten this fall. Find out what your children will be doing in their kindergarten classroom and learn some practical tips about helping your young students succeed in school.

Wednesday, 7:00 p.m.Central Park Library’s Cedar Room. Join local author Ron Hansen, as he discusses his new novel, Exiles, and talks about his books and writing. A graduate of Creighton University, Hansen also attended the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and was a Wallace Stegner Creative Writing Fellow at Stanford University. He is the author of a number of books, including Atticus, Hitler’s Niece, The Assassination of Jesse James, and Mariette in Ecstasy. Ron Hansen currently is the Gerald Manley Hopkins Professor in the Arts and Humanities at Santa Clara University, where he teaches writing and literature. Searching the San Jose Historical Mercury News Archive (1886-1922), Saturday, 9:30-11:00 a.m. Central Park Library Technology Training Center. Thanks to grant money from the Santa Clara Historic Home Tour and the Foundation & Friends of the Santa Clara Library, library cardholders have access to the total contents of various San Jose daily newspapers from 1886-1922. You will have a chance to perform sample searches that will yield information on Santa Clara pioneers, historical landmarks, and more. Learn special techniques to limit your results to marriage or death announcements, news articles or advertisements. Learn how to navigate through a particular day’s newspaper.

Local History Program: Aerial Photos of Santa Clara Valley from the Hatfield Collection, Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. Central Park Library Cedar Room. Ben Hatfield will discuss the history of his father Adrian Hatfield's aerial photography business and his own recently published aerial photo book: Over Time: Palo Alto, 1947-1980. Historical aerial photographs of the Santa Clara area will be displayed, as well. Ben will also talk about his intention to work with his book company, Arcadia Publishing, to produce an aerial photo book for Santa Clara. Hatfield Aerial Survey was founded in 1947 and the company shot aerial photos for developers, architects, and government agencies until 1980. Learn more about the astounding visual archives created by the Hatfield family that documents the evolution of the Santa Clara Valley from dairies, farms, and fruit orchards into the world-renowned high technology Silicon Valley. Those who believe they could identify 1950s-1970s era buildings and ranches in aerial photos taken above Santa Clara are encouraged to attend.

Katherine Hope Borges is the Bay Area representative for the International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG). She has done research on Colonial Era DNA, Mayflower DNA and Scottish DNA. She will discuss the ways in which DNA testing is used in genealogy research.
