In
cooperation with the Santa Clara Unified School District's literacy program,
the library's Bookmobile and a Youth Services librarian make monthly visits
to Family Literacy classes at four elementary schools. Members of these classes
are children and parents who are learning English as a second language and
are newcomers to the United States.
The librarian
presents a program of stories, songs, and fingerplays, and everyone in the
family, from grandparents to preschoolers, joins in the singing, laughter,
and fun.
A typical program
would be:
A flannelboard
version of "Oh, A Hunting We Will Go!" - A reading of Silly Sally - Singing
"I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly," with puppets
Parents and children then
visit the Bookmobile, to choose books and videos to borrow.
Funds for the
program come from the California State Department of Education, and are also
used to purchase books that are given to the program's participants to help
them establish their own home libraries.
Introducing families
to library services is an important goal of the Youth Services Division.
